Due to COVID-19 restrictions on large gatherings, we are
planning for all of our workshops to be delivered virtually this
year. Workshops will be two hours in length, from 9:00-11:00
AM, instead of the usual four hours. If things change and we
are able to meet in person, we will certainly discuss adjusting
our plans and communicate any changes with our Chapter
Members. We are committed to continuing to provide
excellent professional development (and professional
fellowship) to our colleagues as we all navigate these
uncertain times. We anxiously await the time that we can
make music together in person again!
Black Lives Matter
The Central Ohio American Orff Schulwerk Association stands with our national organization in condemning violence and injustices forced upon Black communities across our nation. (Original statement from the American Orff Schulwerk Association below).
In Central Ohio we are blessed with wonderful communities with many cultures; we hold a responsibility to our Black neighbors, colleagues, and the Black students and families we serve to speak up and act against systemic racism and oppression. We acknowledge speaking up is only the first step. COAOSA vows to listen to Black voices, to reflect on these conversations, and to follow through with actions that create real change in the structure and practices of our organization. With this in mind, COAOSA is committed to holding workshops hosted by BBIP (Black, Brown, and Indigenous People) frequently, starting with the 2020-2021 season.
Music can be so powerful, and we are committed to inclusion and diversity in the music classroom and within the music education community. We are committed to bringing about this change by improving our understanding of teaching and learning through music. We are committed to amplifying culturally responsive professional development and practices that foster equity and justice in music classrooms.
We appreciate that other Ohio AOSA chapters are taking actions to create change- we especially appreciate the Greater Cincinnati chapter for letting us use their statement as a guideline for our own.
We believe that Black Lives Matter in Central Ohio and around the world.
